- Hanoi’s West Lake is beloved for its serene beauty and signature lotus tea, while thousands of kilometers away, Hangzhou in China's Zhejiang province also has a lake of the same name with serenity and is famed for Longjing or Dragon Well tea. In this week’s Cultural Rendezvous, Xinmeng Yang, a Chinese journalist and digital storyteller from CGTN, draws a connection between two nations, two lakes, and cultural ties steeped in tea.

Yang, who recently visited Vietnam to cover Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit, found herself deeply moved by the cultural echoes between Hangzhou and Hanoi.

Yang said that, although China and Vietnam are different countries, the two have a lake of the same name and the same obsession with tea. For Yang, who visited Hangzhou four times last year alone, the lake is more than a tourist destination.“I think West Lake is not just a lake. It's part of the culture. part of the spirit of Hangzhou. Hangzhou city is very well-known for its high tech, its e-commerce, and its AI. It's part of leading the direction, leading the tech, leading the future. But the city can blend these aspects very well – the tech part, the futuristic part, and the traditional part – and also the scenery itself,” Yang recalled.

Located in the west of Hangzhou, West Lake is a timeless symbol of Chinese aesthetics, romance, and cultural harmony. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2011, it remains China’s only lake to receive such an honor, described as “reflecting an idealized fusion between humans and nature.”

Covering nearly 6.4 square kilometers, the lake is divided into five sections by three historic causeways. Around its tranquil waters are ancient temples, pagodas, gardens, and pavilions that tell stories that stretch back centuries.

Among its many admirers is Su Dongpo, the famed Song Dynasty poet, who compared the lake to Xi Shi, one of ancient China’s legendary beauties. Even today, that sense of elegance and mystique continues to draw millions.

As a hub of innovation and a cradle of heritage, it draws international visitors and residents who, like Yang, find inspiration in its balance.

She commented, “There are a lot of foreigners, international people living in Hangzhou. Their description of the city is always: half natural, half modern. We blend the natural scenery inside the city but the city is a very modern one moving forward.”

West Lake also lives in legend. The most famous of these is the tale of Bai Suzhen, the white snake spirit, and her mortal lover Xu Xi’an. According to folklore, the two met on a boat gliding across the lake’s serene surface and fell in love instantly. But their happiness was threatened by the monk Fa Hai, who imprisoned Xu Xi'an and later sealed Bai Suzhen beneath Leifeng Pagoda. Years later, she was freed by her loyal sister Xiao Qing, and the lovers were finally reunited.

To many couples, West Lake is more than a backdrop for photos. It’s a place to dream of enduring and destiny-defying love, said Yang.

Amid the cultural richness and romantic legends, West Lake is also home to another national treasure: Longjing tea, or Dragon Well tea, which is characterized by its green color, delicate aroma, mellow taste, and beautiful shape, Yang added.“It's definitely one of the most famous tea-growing areas in China. It’s just grown around the lake area. The most authentic Longjing tea has to be grown next to West Lake. That’s why its full name is West Lake Longjing tea,” she said.

Lotus tea, one of the best Vietnamese tea, is considered a unique gift from Hanoi. Experiencing the traditional lotus tea making Quang An village by the West Lake of Hanoi, a good suggestion travelers should not miss during their trip to the capital city.

Continuing her story about West Lake, Yang told us it made her remember her recent visit to Hanoi, which taught her about another lakeside tea tradition: making lotus-infused tea.

Like Hangzhou’s West Lake, Yang found Hanoi’s West Lake beautiful because of its peaceful scenery, historic temples, and seasonal lotus blooms.

During early morning in the summer, local villagers bring lotus flowers back home which they pick from West Lake in Tay Ho district.

Every summer, locals harvest lotus flowers from the lake to make traditional lotus tea. The process involves storing green tea leaves inside lotus blossoms for about 6 months to absorb the flower’s subtle fragrance, resulting in a uniquely aromatic brew cherished in Vietnamese culture.

Yang is impressed by how Vietnam’s green tea is made to infuse the flavor of fresh lotus flowers.

Yang recalled, “When I first took a sip of it, I felt I was tasting a flower. It was really different. It was as if the lake were blooming inside my mouth. I really loved the strong impression it made on me – how you make the tea, how you cherish the tea culture here. Because, although China and Vietnam are two different countries, we have a lake with the same name and we have the same obsession with tea. That's something new to me. It's amazing.”

Though they are thousands of kilometers apart, Yang said she found a resonance between the two lakes, especially in the way they intertwine natural beauty with rich cultural traditions, like Vietnam’s unique lotus tea.
